Afterwards, some of us went to see the Monday night sneak preview at the film house. The movie was Un prophète, a good movie, but incredibly hard to watch. I squirmed through the whole movie. Tonight I'm going to check out the Money Fix, which is being screened by Transition Towns Rotterdam. Next week IFFR starts!

a new year
Our house is finally back together! Yesterday we made a 3 course meal with a spinach salad contribution from Marcel, a delicious nutty moussaka from Alexander, and I made my first scones ever, lemon cranberry scones, out of "fresh" cranberries left over from Thanksgiving. Marcel whipped the rest of the cranberries into a sauce for on top of the scones. I guess one perk of being unemployed (and all three of us are) is that you have time to cook.

Logo design
Today I rounded up logo design work for a symposium at the University of Illinois. Now I'm trying to fill my days with some work and fun projects.
I just got back from China after three weeks of visiting family and friends with Jorn. We started our trip in Shanghai (5 days), visited Hangzhou (1 day) en route to Fuzhou by train (12.5hrs), just in time to jump on a boat to Matzu island (2 days), then took the boat (10hrs) to Keelung, followed by a bus to Taipei to see my Grandma (5 days), then we flew to Hong Kong to meet up with Bill and Lele (6 days), taking the train to Guangzhou (1 day) to explore the city before we trained it back to Shanghai (2 days) and flew back to the Netherlands. Check out the pictures here.

Mushrooms
Marcel got me addicted to Hugh Fearnley–Whittingstall's series, River Cottage. In this series, Hugh, a London cook, downsizes by buying a farm in Dorset. There he grows all his food and meat, supplemented with fish etc. from the ocean, wild picked edibles and game. In several episodes, he goes mushrooming with serious mushroom experts. One episode even involved hang gliding.
Inspired by Hugh, I took a trip to the Utrechtseheuvelrug with Effrosyni, Jasenko, Yulia and Jorn. Yulia turned out to be a mushroom expert, although she was very modest about her skills. The book we brought turned out to be totally useless, but we ended up picking out 3 types of mushrooms we thought were edible (thanks to Yulia). Mushroom hunting turned out to be a very exciting way to enjoy the outdoors.
Now they are molding in my fridge, before I got a chance to eat them...I will definitely go again.

Life, etc.
I've been looking for a new job...in the meantime I went on a weekend to Cochem, in Germany, our exhibition opened at the NAi, and we had our housewarming. Besides, the job finding stress everything is going pretty well. This week and next week, I have some meetings so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I also watched a lot of Hitchcock in chronological order and got addicted to the BBC series, River Cottage. In a few years I hope to be able to own and work my own farm. Gotta start reading those permaculture books!
